Stoney Creek Bridge - 2
More climbing, and we are at the side of the bridge! Up close it is... well, very different! Impressive, yes - but at the same time almost fragile... probably because of these very rough surroundings!
Walking across, standing on a bridge - the feeling is absolutely esoteric! The empty drop beyound a thin metal grid under your feet, plus all-but-non-existent guard rails... but most of all - the sound of the waterfall, which roars not "under" you, but "behind" you, just on the other side of the bridge! This water roar reflects from the walls of the gorge and magnifies itself, generating a powerful sub-low-frequency sound... We had never encountered anything like this before in our whole lives! This experience does not just carry you away - it blows you away! We don't recommend to stand on the bridge for long time, though - this low frequency is a real mind-twister!
Pan
Hight itself is not as mind-disturbng here as the effect of the whole space "opening" from the narrow confinement bahind and under the bridge into a widening gorge and then "flowing" from the gorge into a tremendous open valley below... Neither words nor photos can adequately describe this breathtaking effect... Maybe this wide pan can help?
There are a few of those mamorial plaques on the bridge parts.
We are on the other side, but the climb continues! Only from above one can notice an elegant longitudal curve of the bridge.
And, finally, just a little higher, a "classic" point. This is where most of the "official" poster photos of this beautiful bridge are taken from. Of course, the "official" photographers convenietly arrive here by a special train, rather than climbing all the way from below.
Rocky Mountaineer
On the way down, we had stopped to catch a final glimpse of the bridge. Suddenly, an all-too-familiar Rocky Mountaineer (see the
other album) had slowly rolled onto the bridge. The unsuspecting passengers were undoubtly admiring at the valley below, oblivious to a much greater view, part of which they had just become...
