La Jolla
Pacific Coast in this area is very open and exposed, with very few shelters, bays or coves. Every such cove is full of marine wildlife, which, even living in sea, still often relies on some shore space for breeding and rest, and clings to whatever protected land it can find. La Jolla cove in San Diego is one of such places. Even though it is the heavily populated area, it is home to a big colony of Californian sea lions. The animals have nowhere else to go - so they’ve learned to tolerate people proximity. You can even go swimming with them – something I would never try with the Steller sea lions on our West Coast! For divers, the area has great kelp forests. Of course, those are also bigger and better off Vancouver Island coast… but water temperature in La Jolla is so less punishing!
